Managing Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs)Although the conditions were not easy (to say the least), with multiple police check points and frequent suicide attacks in the city, we managed to deliver the first academic course on Business and Management to a brave group of talented students at the new American University of Afghanistan in Kabul in 2007. The course materials are available on this site. The course consists of a total of 32 sessions - each 1,5 hours. The course materials are available on this page. This practical but intensive course provides an overview of management skills and offers participants an opportunity to apply business tools through a series of projects, case studies, presentations, group assignments and the development of business plans. The course presents principles of management of small and medium-sized enterprises in a very straightforward and accessible manner, focusing on developing skills participants need to be successful managers and leaders.
For the course we used as text book: Management: Skills and Application, 10th edition. Leslie W. Rue and Lloyd L. Byars. Any other similar book will work as well. The work sheets, power point presentations and exams have been designed to work with other management books. Please feel free to use the materials for your own management course. One student group wrote a winning business plan as part of the course which generated over more than $2 million in revenues for their SME.
